Objective:
Chemistry is the study of matter, energy and their interactions to
form different kinds of both. The emphasis of the first quarter will
be on developing fluency with the processes and language that are required
for further study in chemistry. By the end of the quarter you should
be familiar with the vocabulary, concepts and the methods for describing
matter and its changes.
Prerequisites:
Three units of high school algebra and geometry (or equivalent) and
one unit of high school chemistry (or equivalent).
Required Texts:
Chemistry: The Central Science, 7th ed., Brown, LeMay, &
Bursten, Prentice Hall, Inc (1997)
Student’s Guide to Chemistry: The Central Science, Hill, Prentice Hall,
Inc. (1997)
Calculator:
You will need a calculator capable of square roots, logarithms and
exponential notation. Programmable calculators will not be allowed
during exams.
Exams:
There will a midterm exam and a final exam given during the semester.
Each will be worth 100 points. No make up exams will be given.
Laboratory:
Laboratory will be factored into the comprehensive grade and will be
worth 100 points. Students enrolled in CHEM 591 must also be enrolled
in CHEM 593.
Letter Grades:
Letter grades will be assigned based according to the following point
scale:
A: 90-100%; B: 80-89%;
C: 70-79% ; D: 60-69%; F: <60%
Materials Fees:
The materials fees collected for this laboratory course are used to
partially defray the cost of replacing expendable materials, repairing
defective equipment, repairing obsolete equipment and obtaining new equipment
appropriate for student use in state of the art instruction in the laboratory
science of chemistry
Incomplete Grade Policy:
According the University’s incomplete grade policy, if no formal grade
change occurs within one year, an “I” automatically converts to an “F”.
If graduation occurs within the one-year period, the incomplete grade will
be converted to an “F” before graduation.
