SELECT COMMUNITY SERVICE

24 Challenge Mathematics Program                                                                   1993-2005

The purpose of this program is to promote mastery of basic skills in mathematics.  I developed and directed this popular program for this region.  Approximately 10,000 students in grades four through eight from Mahoning, Trumbull, Beaver, Lawrence, and Mercer Counties participated in this program each year.  Corporate sponsors, totaling approximately $5,000 annually, for the event were secured and they included:  First Energy Corporation, Tribune Chronicle, Mahoning Valley Parent Magazine, Beaver County Times, The Herald, and Town Crier Community Newspapers.

Youngstown State University MathFest                                                         2002-present

The purpose of this one-day event is to celebrate the beauty and power of mathematics with 300 high school juniors and seniors from the region.  At MathFest, students participate in workshops, a mixed team competition, and a school competition.  Workshops include topics such as the golden ratio, mathematical puzzles, game theory, population dynamics, complex numbers, and infinite series and students may choose to participate in two of them.  Students will also have the opportunity to participate in an essay contest stemming from a reading list and/or a poster competition involving data analysis and statistics.  Our mathematicians present information on careers in mathematics.  Prizes and awards are given for winners of the various competitions and contests.

Soccer Coordinator                                                                                               2005-2006

With the help of my wife and two other people, I coordinated the fall soccer program for St. Joseph School in Sharon, PA.   As coordinator, I was responsible for player registration, fees, uniform orders, equipment, referees, field maintenance, problem resolution, tournaments and fund raising. Approximately 120 students participate in this program.

Hermitage Fast Pitch Softball Association                                                          2004-2006

I was the secretary and a coach for the Hermitage Fast Pitch Softball Association.  I was responsible for player registration, fees, uniform orders, equipment, field maintenance, and management of a 14U softball team.  Approximately 80 players participate in the association.  The past two years, my team finished 2nd in the league.  In 2005, my all-star team won a bronze medal at the Keystone Games - Pennsylvania’s Summer Olympics.  In 2006, my all-star team won a berth to the PONY National Tournament.

Mercer County Patriots Travel Team                                                                 2004-2007

I am the founder and manager of an elite fast pitch softball team.  Last year, the team won a berth into the Pony National Softball tournament.  Since then, they have won or placed in several tournaments.  They recently became co-champions in the Thunderplex Winter Softball League.  Most of the members of this team will play softball in college.
