From the Chair’s Desk
Dear Student:
On 15 August 2000, I became the chairman of the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics.Since then I have been learning
my new responsibilities as
chairman and I have gotten to know this department a lot better.
Youngstown State University has an outstanding mathematics department!I
am so impressed with
the excellent students who are majoring in mathematics and with
the long list of accomplishments of both our faculty and students.Youngstown
State’s Department
of Mathematics shines in so many areas.For example, did you know
that our performance on the 2000 COMAP International Mathematical Modeling
Contest
placed us in the top 20 in the world? Did you know that we have
had more students make presentations and win awards for those presentations
at the MAA/Pi Mu
Epsilon Summer Math Fest than any other college or university
in the country? It is great to be part of such a winning team. Please take
a chance and look around at some of the wonderful activities we are doing
here.
Over the past year, the Mathematics and Statistics Program has increased
its visibility throughout the state of Ohio. Some highlights include:
Even though I tried to highlight most of the activites, there is much more to our department then we could possibly put on a website! I would really enjoy meeting and talking with you. Please call the Mathematics office to set up and appointment with me. I look forward to meeting you.Excellent finishes in the International COMAP Modeling Contest;
Award-winning students presentations at both Ohio and national MAA meetings;
Hosting annual Pi Mu Epsilon conferences for over 60 students from area universities;
Excellent finishes in the national Putnam Exam through a well coached team;
Coaching programs for local high school students to improve their score on the American High School Mathematics Exam;
Saturday Enrichment classes for Youngstown area middle school students and teachers;
Awarding of $42,000 of matching funds from the National Science Foundation to equip a computer classroom for Mathematics and Statistics courses.
Sincerely,
Nathan P. Ritchey, Ph.D.
