COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class provides instruction and experience in historic preservation education. Our project for this term involves collaboration with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. Students will utilize MVHS collections and other resources in conducting research leading to a potential exhibit or exhibit-related publication.
The subject for this term is the Wilford P. and Olive F.A. Arms residence, “Greystone,” at 648 Wick Avenue in Youngstown. Now operated as a museum by MVHS, the house is an outstanding example of Arts and Crafts design which retains many of its original features on the first floor along with some significant subsequent modifications.
Research projects will explore the process of designing the house (a collaboration between Olive Arms and the architects) as well as its contents and setting. Documentary source materials at MVHS include: original blueprints, sketches by the client, photo scrapbooks, and some narrative accounts. In addition to the house itself, physical evidence includes furnishings and decorative arts, both on display and in collections storage.
Students will also explore other potential sources of information, including tracking down the successor(s) of the Cleveland architectural firm commissioned by Olive Arms and exploring possible connections with the well-known California partnership of Greene and Greene.
The class will therefore be contributing to to the development of a future exhibit or publication on the history, design and significance of Greystone which may be incorporated into the long-range plans of MVHS. The immediate goal of the present project will be to prepare a group of essays that can be distilled into a small guidebook or booklet about the house.
