The Center for Historic Preservation--General Information

The Center for Historic Preservation at Youngstown State University works to promote revitalization in Youngstown and the surrounding area through historic preservation, planning and education, and adaptive use. We believe in making the most of existing resources by celebrating and safeguarding northeastern Ohio's and western Pennsylvania's impressive collection of vintage architecture and historic resources.

Our community-oriented approach to research, teaching, and service is designed to:

Housed in the Phelps Building on the campus of Youngstown State University, the Center consists of faculty and research office, studio and classroom space, oral history transcription facilities, a conservation laboratory, computer and drafting work stations, a photography lab, and a library and archives.

Youngstown State University has designated the Center for Historic Preservation as a Presidential Academic Center for Excellence in Research. As a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Center serves as the community outreach agent of the Historic Preservation Program. Under the direction of Dr. Donna M. DeBlasio, the Center's activities revolve around students and 14 faculty members from seven different University departments.
 

Why Join The Center for Historic Preservation?

To help support the activities of the Center, the Friends of the Center for Historic Preservation was founded in 1997 and is composed of students, teachers, local preservationists, and scholars. The Friends of the Center help to form the backbone of the historic preservation program at Youngstown State University.

Membership dues generated by the Friends of the Center for Historic Preservation are used to fund an annual speaker series, preservation workshops, library acquisitions, and publications produced by the Center.

As a Friend of the Center you will receive copies of the Center newsletter, an invitation to the annual speaker series and preservation workshops, access to preservation related publications housed in the Center, discounts on fees for Center sponsored conferences, and a 20% discount on all publications produced by the Center.
 

Upcoming Projects

Future projects to be completed by the Center for Historic Preservation include an architectual and historic survey of Youngstown's northside, oral interviews with workers at the GM Lordstown plant and the restoration of the historic Peck-Schaff House, the future home of the Center for Historic Preservation, on Wick Avenue in Youngstown, Ohio.
