Youngstown State University Location
Founded in 1908, Youngstown State University (YSU) now enrolls 12,000 students on its handsomely landscaped 130 acre campus. The university comprises 5 colleges and a School of Graduate Studies. Youngstown is less than 1 1/2 hours to Pittsburgh or Cleveland, less than 7 hours to Chicago, Washington, or New York.
The Youngstown area lies in the glaciated Appalachian Plateaus. The landscape is forested by mostly secondary growth of mixed deciduous species, mostly maple. The natural environments are impacted by coal mining, waning heavy industry, and urban and suburban encroachment onto farmland. Faculty and students have active research programs concerning brownfields, land subsidence, water quality of streams and lakes, and airborne products of combustion.
