Foreign Language Requirement
and Placement Tests

THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

The standard foreign language requirement is a proficiency requirement. It applies to all YSU students with Majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Most students satisfy it by taking an elementary (1550) and intermediate (2600) course in a single language offered at YSU for a total of 8 credit hours. Languages offered at YSU are Spanish, French, Italian, German, Latin, Russian, Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Swahili, Chinese, and Arabic. High school foreign language study does not satisfy the standard requirement.

Some YSU colleges have different or additional foreign language requirements.  To be sure of your language requirement, contact the advisor in your Major.

Below is information on placement tests and other alternative ways to satisfy the standard requirement. Contact the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at 330-941-3461 or email fll@cc.ysu.edu with any questions.

SATISFYING THE STANDARD FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Placement Test at YSU (FLPT)

Many students who have taken high-school languages take the FLPT to determine the level at which they should begin their foreign language study.

Exams are offered throughout the year in Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Latin. One test per language is administered and may not be repeated. The test is free. The student's score determines whether he/she places out of the language requirement or has placed into 1550 or 2600.

Students should call Amy Gordon, 330-941-1343 and request to take the exam in their language. Student receives no course credit.

Placement test results from a college other than YSU are not recognized.

Some Examples for the Placement Test

CLEP Tests

One CLEP test measures 1550, 2600 and 2605 (Advanced Intermediate). There is a fee to take the test which is offered regularly throughout the state. Students who score well enough on CLEP examinations receive credit for the equivalent course. Students who receive credit for 2600 or higher are deemed to have completed at least the standard requirement.

AP (Advanced Placement) Tests

Students who score 3 or better on an AP examination receive credit for 2605 (Advanced Intermediate) in the Modern Languages and for 2603 in Latin. They are deemed to have completed at least the standard requirement.

NYU Tests

Students with proficiency in a language other than those taught or tested at YSU may apply to NYU to schedule a test in their language. Applications and detailed information are in the Foreign Languages Office, DeBartolo Hall, 501. The test is administered in the Foreign Language Department. It is costly and can take up to six months to process.  Student receives no course credit.

Prior Instruction in a Language Other Than English

Students who provide a high school diploma or documented evidence of coursework beyond the high school level from an institution in which the language of instruction is something other than English are deemed to have satisfied the language requirement.  Student receives no course credit.

Transfer Credit

Courses from another college that equate to 1550 and 2600 satisfy the standard requirement. Student receives course credit, but grades do not transfer.
