Lake Erie Enology Research Center

Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the Lake Erie Enology Research Center (LEERC).

In 1983, Lake Erie was approved by BATF as an "American Viticultural Appellation" (AVA) based on its unique and identifiable growing conditions. The shallow waters of Lake Erie provide moderating climate conditions allowing the cultivation of Vitis vinifera grape varieties. The appellation covers vineyards on the northern and southern shore of the lake. The southern shore extends over 3 states (New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio) from Buffalo in the east to Toledo in the west and includes more than 40,000 acres of vineyards. Whereas most research has focused on viticulture few scientific studies have investigated the unique microbiology and the enology of the appellation.

In 2001, the Lake Erie Enology Research Center (LEERC) was established as a collaborative effort between academic institutions and private organizations with a strong interest in winemaking and fermentation processes as they relate to the characteristics of Lake Erie wines. Our goal is to provide the scientific basis to enhance the health and competitiveness of Lake Erie grape and wine producers. We encourage the industry, private organizations, other academic institutions and students to join us in our efforts. We offer undergraduate and graduate programs and internships for people interested.

Please let us know your ideas how to best accomplish our goals. Join us in our activities in the way that suits you best. Come and see us!
