Call for Applications and Nominations for CEA Executive Directorand CEA Treasurer


Executive Director and Treasurer Positions:

According to the CEA constitution, “The executive Director shall be the chief administrative officer of the Association . . . elected by a majority vote of the Board of Directors for . . . three years,” with the option of being “re-elected for consecutive terms without restriction.” He or she “shall conduct correspondence, . . . ensure proper notification of all meetings of the Association and of the Board” and ensure the recording and preserving of their minutes. The Treasurer is elected similarly; he or she “shall collect membership dues and receive all gifts and all proper payment to the Association, including those offered for purchase of its publications . . . , shall pay all bills . . . keep accounts . . . and report to the Board of Directors at the annual meeting” and other occasions, such as the winter online board meeting.

More specifically, the Executive Director prepares materials for and conducts the annual CEA elections; with the Treasurer, prepares membership recruitment materials each fall; supervises clerical, graduate student, and other staff in the CEA national office; with the Treasurer, visits city sites of future conferences and negotiates with hotels all business matters relating to the Spring conference; supervises the formatting and printing of program copy for that conference;  supervises CEA awards; conducts the selection of the Robert Hacke Award recipient; with the current CEA President, prepares the agenda for all board and business meetings; represents CEA at academic functions throughout the year; and prepares the directory of frequently consulted names of CEA members.

Duties specific to the Treasurer include maintaining financial records; filing annual reports with CEA, IRS, and the state agency for incorporated organizations; maintaining membership rosters, keeping payment records and current addresses; soliciting book exhibits and responding to requests to exhibit at the annual conference, coordinating the business aspects of CEA publications and mailing of CEA publications; responding to letters requesting information about the organization or its publications; responding to letters requesting information about the organization or its publications. The treasurer must be able to use a standard database application and should use a basic financial program such as Quicken.

People holding these positions should expect some clerical, reassigned time, and financial support from their institution.
