General
Laboratory Information:
The laboratory portion of this course consists two formal one-hour thirty minute sessions per week. Students are advised, however, that satisfactory progress requires additional time spent in the laboratory outside the scheduled laboratory period. Open laboratory periods are posted both below and in the laboratory. These times are subject to modification, so please refer to back to this information periodically. Monday: 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Tuesdsay: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM - 4:00 PM Wednesday: 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM Thursday: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM Friday: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 12:00 Pm - 1:00 PM Depending upon the exercise(s) being
performed each week,
students are
expected to return to the laboratory to complete their work or make
additional observations. There are
specific rules required of students attending
open laboratory periods. Please read the following information
carefully! Your cooperation will be expected! Violations of
this policy will result in the loss of privilege to attend any open
laboratory period.
While a scheduled laboratory is in session, students not enrolled in that particular section must not enter the laboratory during the first hour.
The laboratory activities are divided into exercises meant to not only convey the basic technological skills needed by microbiologists, but also to supplement and enhance particular topics covered by the instructor during the lecture section of the course. Skills and concepts to be covered include microscopy, sterile technique, proper handling of microbes, microbial culture, the identification of microbes by biochemical and other means, the microbiology of food/water, and the basic principles of microbial growth, metabolism, control, and genetics. In addition, the laboratory section of BIOL 3702 has been designated as Writing Intensive and will help students fulfill the YSU General Education Requirement (GER).
Attendance
of the laboratory section is essentially mandatory. A student may
be able to attend another laboratory section in certain cases of an
unexpected, excused absence. However, students may not
arbitrarily attend any laboratory section of their choosing or by their
whimsical fancy. Attendance of a different laboratory section
requires permission of both the course instructor and the TA(s)
responsible for the laboratory sections involved. All students are
expected to arrive before the scheduled time for
laboratory to begin. The laboratory instructor often reviews the
activities to be performed that day and advises the class of any
changes to be made. This information is critical to the success
of the laboratory exercise(s) being conducted. This information
will not be repeated for tardy students not having an acceptable
excuse.
by J. P. Harley. 2005. WCB McGraw-Hill. (If you buy a used manual, be sure it includes all the laboratory report page.) Finally,
students must
acquire a laboratory coat (or smock) and safety
glasses to be permitted to participate in all laboratory
activities. Most of all other materials necessary for BIOL
3702L will be provided for the students.

Laboratory Exercises: Students will be required to turn in laboratory reports based upon their work. Mainly, this will consist the “tear-out sheet” reports located at the rear of the required laboratory manual. Hence, it is important that each student secure a new laboratory manual. Used manuals may not contain all the pertinent report sheets. The course instructor/TA will not provide copies of missing report sheets. (Note: good, quality photocopies of these “tear-out sheets” are acceptable for submission to your TA). The BIOL 3702 laboratory schedule lists particular questions to be answered on these sheets in addition to the required data. Please note that some of these exercises are to be performed by each individual, whereas assigned groups will perform some of the other activities. Not every laboratory report will be collected and graded. Typically, without warning the course instructor/TA will request specific reports at the beginning of a laboratory session. These reports must be submitted immediately. If they are not, they will be considered late and, except for excused absences or instances of tardiness. A total of 100 points has been allocated to this grade component with each one collected valued at a point level to be determined. A score of “0” will be recorded for late or missing laboratory reports.
Four (4) quizzes
have
been scheduled throughout the semester.
These quizzes will be given at the beginning of a laboratory
session. Each is worth 15 points. Students who miss a
laboratory quiz due to an unexcused
absence or instance of tardiness will not be permitted to take the
quiz. For individuals who miss a quiz, score will be recorded as
a “0”.
Skills Tests: Students will perform three specific Skills Tests to assess their mastery of specific microbiological techniques. Details regarding each of these activities are posted as PDF documents as llinks in the laboratory schedule or through buttons at the top of this web page. The first two skills tests are worth 5 points each and the last is worth 20 points. Students who miss a skills test due to an unexcused absence or instance of tardiness will not be permitted to complete it. For these individuals, a score will be recorded as a “0”. Students have the
opportunity to earn a total of 10 points in the
category entitled “Laboratory Citizenship”. These points are
subjectively granted by your course instructor/TA. Award of these
points is primarily based upon your behavior/participation in
maintenance of the laboratory and its equipment. For example,
students are responsible for the equipment in their drawers and
cabinets. It is essential that students maintain this equipment
by following specific guidelines or directions given by the
instructor/TA during the course. Moreover, your
willingness/ability to follow standard laboratory practices will be
monitored. This includes the prompt and proper disposal of
cultures or other materials in the acceptable manner. Hence,
failure to follow guidelines/directions or actively participate as a
“good laboratory citizen” will result in the loss of Laboratory
Citizenship points. The number of points deducted from this
category is at the discretion of the course instructor/TA.
A
laboratory schedule has been established and is given below. It
is also
available as as PDF document through a link
at the top of this page.
This
schedule contains dates and assignments pertinent to the laboratory
portion of BIOL 3702, including dates of laboratory quizzes, skills
tests, reading
assignments,
etc. Lastly,
while a syllabus is
considered as a type of contract between the instructor and student,
extenuating circumstances can affect the complete fulfillment of the
syllabus. Hence, students should view the Syllabus
