The department of Mathematics and Statistics
and the YSU chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon hosts an annual
Tailgate party before the Homecoming Football game each fall. All
current students and alumni are invited! Please join us from 1-4pm in the M-7 parking lot.
Pi Mu Epsilon sponsors a mathematical talk during each semester.
In the past Bill Lindgren from Slippery Rock State University spoke to
our undergraduates on ``The Most Interesting Integer.'' We also heard
Dr Yates talk on ``The Mathematics of Tsunamis.'' Dr Morley
Davidson of Kent State University talked to us ``The Mathematics of the Rubik's Cube.''
The biggest event of the academic year is
the Pi Mu Epsilon Regional Mathematics Conference for undergraduate mathematics majors.
It is held annually on the third or fourth Saturday in February. The purpose of the conference is to give undergraduate mathematics
majors a chance to give
presentations without being intimidated by the presence of faculty. It
also allows students to meet others with similar interests and share in the wonder of mathematics.
More than 100 students from colleges and universities in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia attend and give presentations.
High school students interested in mathematics are also invited
to attend. We again have generous sponsorship by NSF Grant DMS-0241090. If you are interested in

Pi Mu Epsilon will host it's Spring formal dinner and dance in April in the stadium
club. More information to follow when available.
The department of Mathematics and Statistics annually hosts YSU MathFest. YSU MathFest is an outreach program in which 300 local
high school students come to YSU for a fun-filled day of mathematics workshops
and competitions. We have had schools from Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Mahoning, Mercer, Portage, Summit, and Trumbull
counties attended. YSU MathFest helps fulfill one of the department's goals of communicating to all
students how rewarding a career in mathematics can be.

The department of Mathematics and Statistics recently started an AWM (Association for Women in Mathematics Chapter). We have
many fun events planned for this year, including a Pi-k race on Pi day. See our Facebook page for more information.
The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP)
Mathematical Contest in Modeling and The
Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling is held annually the first weekend in February.
YSU has a long tradition of doing very well in this competition.
The highest award possible is the award of "Outstanding," which is
awarded to approximately 1% of all the teams.
Following that is the award of "Meritorious," which is given to approximately 15% of all the teams, and
finally the award of "Honorable Mention" is given to approximately 23% of all the teams. Take a look at

We will be forming teams at the end of Fall semester. We plan to have several training sessions throughout
January. Interested students should contact me. We intend to have more winning teams!

Pi Mu Epsilon hosts several fund raising events throughout the school year.
We sell Gorant's candy bars in the math department main office all year long. We also host a bake sale the Wednesday
before Thanksgiving. We are also selling
YSU Math t-shirts for $10. Please stop by
