Founding Member and Central Node of
The STaRBURSTT Cyberdiffraction Consortium

Single Crystal Diffraction at YSU:

The X-Ray diffraction lab at YSU owns three single crystal diffractomters: Two older Siemens P4 instruments with single point scintillation detector, and one modern Bruker Smart Apex area detector diffracomter.

The Bruker Smart Apex instrument - the workhorse of the facility - was recently upgraded to run the Bruker Apex2 suite of programs and will be equipped soon with a BRuNO automatic sample handling robot for remote access and automated sample screening. It is equipped with a Kryoflex low temperature cooling unit for routine data collection at temperatures as low as 90 K (standard is 100 K). It operates with Mo radiation for high resolution data collection and is equipped with capillary focusing optics and is equipped with a 62 mm 4K  chip CCD detector.

Apex1

With the unique Apex2  software even samples composed of several crystallites as well as split or twinned crystals may be successfully measured and their structures solved.

Apex4

The BRuNO sample handling unit will enable storage and automatic changing of frozen crystals at liquid nitrogen temperatures. It will allow for manual or automatic mounting, centering, screeining, indexing, and scoring, followed by data collection on only the best candidate crystals.

Access to the lab is also facilitated via two remotely controlable web cams.
