Certificate Description
This two-course sequence (8 semester hours) is designed to
meet the needs of working professionals in health care and
related fields and others who wish to pursue postgraduate
study in bioethics. The sequence will be of particular
value to those serving or preparing to serve on
institutional ethics committees in hospitals, home health
care services, nursing homes, and elsewhere, as well as
others (people in local government, insurance, and the
media, for example) who wish to explore major questions and
recent developments in bioethics.
Certificate Requirements
To receive a certificate in bioethics, students must
complete 8 semester hours of courses, typically Phil 6900,
Ethics in Medicine and the Health Care Professions, and
Phil 6901, Bioethics and Public Policy, with a grade-point
average in those courses of 3.0 or above.
For admission to the Graduate Sequence in Bioethics,
students must meet the requirements for admission to the
School of Graduate Studies and Research at YSU and have
other preparation or experience judged satisfactory by the
Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Preparation
or experience that may qualify as satisfactory includes,
but is not limited to, training or experience in the health
care professions.
Curriculum
PHIL 6900, Ethics in Medicine and the Health Care
Professions. Examines issues raised by the institutional
structure of medicine and the health care system; major
emphasis is given to the diverse roles played by health
care professionals and the practical and ethical conflicts
that they produce. 4 s.h.
PHIL 6901, Bioethics and Public Policy. Emphasizes the
larger policy issues that impact bioethics; examines their
constitutional, social, and moral aspects and their impact
on patients, health care providers, and the institutional
structure of health care. 4 s.h.
