Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences

The Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences is located in Moser Hall (Engineering Science Building). Seven full-service faculty, two cross-appointed faculty [with Biology and Chemical Engineering], two emeritus professors, and several part-time faculty provide instruction for approximately 40 Geology and Earth Science and 50 Environmental Studies majors and graduate students.

The Department offers a BS in Geology, an AB in Geology, an AB in Earth Science, a BS in Environmental Studies, a graduate certificate in Environmental Studies, and an MS in Environmental Studies.  Minors for the geology program include: Geoscience, Environmental Geology, and Engineering Geology. Minors for the environmental studies program include: Geology, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Geography, Allied Health, Technology, Economics, and Political Science.

State-of-the-art computer labs, a mineralogy/petrology lab, a sedimentation lab, and an environmental sampling lab provide core facilities to an undergraduate education.  Cooperative efforts with the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Civil/Environmental/Chemical Engineering provide additional support for the Master's program.

Educational research opportunities are made available with an x-ray diffraction lab, a microscopy lab, geophysical instruments, stream and ground-water monitoring equipment, environmental safety protective equipment and clothing, and air and soil sampling and analysis equipment.

The Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum provides an outstanding collection of minerals for geology studies and for community services.
