Career opportunities for English majors
are varied and limited only by an individual’s
imagination and energy. The traditional careers for
English majors remain teaching, writing, and editing,
but graduates have found wonderful careers in a variety
of fields.
There is no question that the skills
English majors acquire—centered on the ability
to use the English language effectively—open doors
to careers. Those with strong professional training
in interpretation and communication are needed in “information-handling”
fields, such as advertising, public relations, media
relations, book and magazine publishing, journalism,
and more.
Also in this category are the rapidly
expanding information retrieval and exchange industries
that require not only technicians but also broadly educated
managerial personnel. Business and government seek employees
who can communicate on a wide range of topics to serve
as information officers and editors.
Secondary schools require teachers
who are equipped to offer students the joys of language
and literature, both written and and spoken, informative
and dramatic. They also need teachers trained in journalism
and advising student publications.
