Undergraduate Requirements

Undergraduates studying

The Department of Biological Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. The department has specialized courses in three major divisions: Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy, and Evolution and Ecology. Courses are designed to prepare students for a wide variety of fields and future careers including dentistry, conservation ecology, health-science related careers, environmental sciences, medicine, veterinary medicine, microbiology, physical therapy, molecular biology, biomedical research and biotechnology. Suggested programs and course sequences suitable to these fields are available in the department office. Career advisement is also available from departmental faculty concerning course selection appropriate for a specific discipline.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences

The Bachelor of Science degree is recommended for those students who wish to pursue careers in the Biological Sciences. The B.S. degree in Biology requires a minimum of 35 semester hours from within the Department of Biological Sciences. Departmental courses at the 1000 level are not applicable to the Bachelor of Science degree.

All Biological Sciences majors must take the following courses:

1

General Biology: Molecules and Cells (BIOL 2601) and General Biology: Organisms and Ecology (BIOL 2602). These courses are prerequisites for all Biology core courses.

8 s. h.

2

Core Courses: Students must select a minimum of one course from two of the following groups. Students may select additional core courses provided the requirement for core courses in two different groups is fulfilled.

7 - 9 s. h.

Group A

Cell Biology: Fine Structure(BIOL 3711)  3 s. h. or Genetics (BIOL 3721)  3s. h.

Group B

Human Physiology (BIOL 3730)  5 s. h.

Group C

Plant Diversity (BIOL 3740)  4 s. h. or Animal Diversity (BIOL 3741)  4s. h.

3

An additional 18-20semester hours of Biology courses must be taken at the 3000-5000 level. A minimum of two of these courses must have a laboratory component. All upper division Biology courses require selected core courses as prerequisites.

18-20 s.h.

4

Senior Biology Capstone Experience (BIOL 4865) is required for all senior level majors in the Biological Sciences.

2 s. h.

Additional requirements for the B.S. degree in Biological Sciences:

  • Chemistry:
General Chemistry I and II, with labs (CHEM 1515, 1516)
Organic Chemistry I and II, with labs (CHEM 3719, 3720)
    Biochemistry (CHEM 3785) is recommended
  • Physics:

  • Math:
Applied Calculus (MATH 1570) or Calculus I (MATH 1571)
    Statistical Methods (STAT 3717)

Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biological Sciences

The Bachelor of Arts degree is recommended only for those students who plan careers in business, secondary education, or technical support careers that relate to the Biological Sciences. The B.A. degree in Biology requires a minimum of 30 semester hours from within the Department of Biological Sciences.
