The graduate program in the Department of Biological
Sciences at Youngstown State University leads to a Master of Science
degree with opportunities in a wide variety of fields. The program seeks
to develop the qualities of independent thinking and problem solving
skills. The goal is to prepare the students for research and academic
careers.
Admission
Requirements
A formal application for admission to the graduate program
is made through the School of Graduate Studies.
Graduate
Students:
In addition to the minimum School of Graduate Studies admission requirements,
applicants must have the following:
-Completed 16 semester hours undergraduate biology (or equivalent) with
a 2.7 grade point average or better.
-Completed organic chemistry, introductory physics and statistics (with
a C grade or better).
-Taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
-A minimum composite score of 1300 on the verbal, quantitative, and
analytical sections is expected.
Graduate
Assistants:
-Full acceptance (not provisional) to the graduate program.
-Formal application submitted to the School of Graduate Studies.
Master
of Science Degree Requirements
-Complete the required semester hours of graduate studies
-Earn a passing grade on the comprehensive written exam
-Submit an acceptable thesis reporting the results of a research project
-Pass an oral review given by the graduate committee
